Chronic Cough: Causes and Considerations
While children are more prone to catching colds compared to adults, acute upper respiratory infections that cause coughing usually improve or resolve within 1-2 weeks. However, if a cough persists for 3-4 weeks, it’s essential to look beyond cough medicine and explore other potential underlying causes. In pediatric cases, consider the following possible reasons for chronic cough:
Asthma: Chronic cough could be related to asthma.
Bacterial Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes due to bacterial infection.
Chronic Suppurative Lung Disease: Persistent lung infection with pus formation.
Foreign Body Aspiration: Inhalation of foreign objects into the airways.
Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses.
Gastroesophageal Reflux: Stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus.
Habit or Psychogenic Cough: Persistent cough without an underlying physical cause.
If your child’s cough persists, consider seeking medical evaluation to identify the specific cause and provide appropriate management.
